I Can Smell Spring In the Air!

Ya know, I was born in winter.  That kind of stinks for a dog with spina bifida that can't get around easily.  That means I can't spend a lot of time outside and didn't get a chance to mingle with nature much.  But now that it's getting warmer, you can't hold me back!  I want to be outside every second.  I sit on my bed on the porch.  My mom takes me for walks in my stroller.  And I get outside on the sidewalk in my wheels too!  See if you can catch me around Chicago in my red stroller.  You can't miss me with my big bully smile!

I'm Not Alone. I Met Fellow Humans With Spina Bifida

So many of you know that I was born with a condition called spina bifida.  Dogs and humans can both have this disease in various degrees.  Mine is what caused me to not walk as a young pup.  I have limited neurological function in my back legs (they are just weak and not terribly reactive) which made it hard for me to learn to stand.  But my front legs are strong and sturdy and do the job for all 4!

I was tickled that I made friends recently at the IKC show.  They came over to see me and to share with me that they also have spina bifida!  We bonded immediately.  It was good to know I'm not along.  I think I made them smile too.  I just wanted to let them know how happy I was to meet them.

I Love My Sleep Overs with Emma and Kurt

I am one lucky lady.  I have my foster mom and brothers and sisters, I have a bunch of CEBR volunteers who adore me, a fan club all my own (cool huh?) and I also love my therapist Emma and her beau Kurt.  I spend a lot of time with them and they take such great care of me.   I wormed my way into Kurt's heart.  He lets me nap on his belly on the couch.  He works on adjusting my wheels for me.  And gives me lots of lovin.    He's my main squeeze!  Sending my heart out to Kurt and Emma!

Melting Hearts and Making Friends

Oh boy do I have a lot to catch you up on!  I'm growing like a weed!  I'm up to 22 pounds and I'm mostly all muscle.  I'm working my front legs so hard.  Just trying to make the wheels work for me.  I am most likely headed into my 3rd set of wheels so stay tuned for that.  They call me a "work in progress."  I continue to melt hearts all over town and am excited to come to Pet Expo next weekend.

In the meantime I got to meet a new rescue playmate today....she is so little and feisty.  We are going to be fast friends.  I'm sorry I haven't been updating the blog.  I'm a busy girl with places to go and things to do.  I will make a much better effort!

Later skaters!

Look At Me. Walking Around Logan Square!

Hi everyone,

It's been a few days since my last post but I wanted you to see how much progress I'm making!  My wheels are "in the shop" while they make some adjustments to make it easier for me to walk.  In the meantime my foster mom was able to retrofit this standing sling with wheels and some extra support and I can use this as a wheel chair too!  Here I am walking around Logan Square using all 4 legs to motor.  My back legs are still way less functional, but heck, I'm not complaining because I can use these front legs to scoot scoot scoot!   My friends at Integrative Pet Care haven't seen this video yet -- I bet they will love it!

And guess how much I weigh?  18 lbs!  Yup....fatty!  Enjoy.

My First Steps Outside. It Feels So Good!

I got to take my first steps outside in the "real" world this week.  It felt crazy good.  Now I am obsessed with looking at the window to see all of the cool stuff out there that I have been missing.  With these wheels I can go anywhere!  I dare you to try to slow me down!  Love to Emma and Dr. Ridley for helping me get to this spot!
